Principal's Corner

Sidney Glen Families,

We have had a tremendous first week of school! Our team has been working hard, preparing for an amazing year of learning and growing together. This year's focus is to develop our schoolwide PBIS ("Positive Behavior in School") system. At Sidney Glen, this means we are using shared messaging, teaching, and reinforcing positive behavior.

  • For messaging, you will hear talk of "The Dolphin Way," the "safe, kind, and responsible" behavior we learn at school. Students will see posters in classrooms and around our school describing positive behaviors.
  • For teaching, teachers are taking time in classrooms and all over Sidney Glen to define and practice exactly what behaviors are expected.
  • For reinforcing, our commitment is to see and uplift every student with positive recognition.

Students receive Dolphin SPLASH notes and we are celebrating PBIS at monthly assemblies.

Our PBIS work also includes building a schoolwide system to collect data and collaborate as a school team to adjust our strategies to support student needs.

In classrooms, routines are being established, and we are intentionally focusing on building relationships and helping students to settle at school and be ready to learn. Now, students enter school and sit down in their class lines to quietly read, draw, or write until they are picked up by their teachers. We believe this will lead to a more orderly and calm morning routine that helps students enter class and focus. Once in class, students in every room begin their day with a morning meeting. This further allows students to build connections and be ready to dive into learning.

Finally, I wanted to send a few notes and reminders regarding our arrival and dismissal process:

Arrival

  • Our student day begins at 9:05. Students are welcome on campus beginning at 8:45 (students eating school breakfast may enter beginning at 8:40).
  • We ask that families wait until 8:45 to drop students off as prior supervision is not available.

Dismissal

  • When pulling into the lot, please fill in both lanes until the merge point at the corner to allow more cars off the road.
  • If you have a student name sign, please display this in your window as you pull up. This helps us get students out to cars more quickly.
  • Please remain in your car as your student comes out so we can keep cars moving in the line.

Welcoming students and families back once more has been so gratifying for our whole team. In the coming days, we will continue working hard to build our PBIS system and help students feel connected and settled. Ultimately, this is a foundation upon which we will see our greatest learning yet.

In partnership,

Shawn Cook
